Reflection
The web accessibility project was very near and dear to my heart since I’ve been a champion of accessibility for a very long time. Because of the scramble to switch over to virtual learning during the pandemic, accessibility best-practices took a back seat to just having something -- anything -- online for students to do. For students who receive special education services, they are legally entitled to a free and appropriate public education (FAPE), which means accessibility is a matter of federal law. For my project I envisioned the hiring of a web accessibility coordinator (WAC) to conduct an audit of online webpages and materials, assist in fixing the issues, and create professional development for teachers and staff designing their online classes. I’m committed to staying in the classroom as a teacher, but if I ever did want to switch jobs, I think I would want to become a WAC. Surprisingly, I was not asked to address internet safety much in any of my projects (although there was more emphasis on that in my masters level classes). Perhaps it was assumed that everything we did would take internet safety into consideration? I did have a section addressing it in my comprehensive technology integration plan, but upon further reflection, I think I should have included more safety information in my online study skills course.
